Ice & Roller Hockey gear

Ice Hockey Gear

The following is a general guide. If your child previously played roller hockey and has full gear, odds are that he or she has most of these items already. Please speak to your coach to see if the items are fit for ice hockey, or if there are any changes to this list. For a first time player, it is sometimes easier to simply go to Pure Hockey in Fairfield or a rink's pro shop and have the salesperson outfit you with all of the gear.  You can also visit websites such as hockeymonkey.com or purehockey.com.

  1. HECC certified helmet with full face shield and chin strap.  HECC is a certification for the helmet--its circular sticker is usually found on the back of the helmet and states that the helmet is HECC certified.  In addition, this sticker also has a date expiration stamped on it.
  2. Mouthpiece--must be colored (not clear) and kept in the mouth AT ALL TIMES during play!
  3. Elbow pads
  4. Padded hockey gloves
  5. Shin pads
  6. Shoulder pads
  7. Hockey girdle. This might be referred to as "hockey pants" online, but it shouldn't be confused with roller hockey pants.
  8. Legal hockey stick
  9. Athletic cup (for males) or a pelvic protector (females)
  10. Hockey skates
  11. Neck guard

Goalies require special equipment. Please speak to your coach before buying goalie gear.

Roller Hockey Gear

The following is a general guide. If your child plays ice hockey and has full gear, odds are that he or she has most of these items already. Please speak to your coach to see if there are any changes to this list.

Gear can be purchased online, or in person at a retailer like Pure Hockey in Fairfield.

  1. HECC Certified Helmet with full face shield and chin strap.  HECC is a certification for the helmet--it's circular sticker is usually found on the back of the helmet and states that the helmet is HECC certified.  In addition, this sticker also has a date expiration stamped on it.
  2. Mouthpiece--must be colored (not clear) and kept in the mouth AT ALL TIMES during play!
  3. Elbow Pads
  4. Padded Hockey Gloves
  5. Shin Pads
  6. Shoulder Pads
  7. Hockey Girdle or Padded Roller Hockey Pants. Kids who also play ice hockey tend to use their ice hockey girdle, while roller-only players often go with the lighter padded roller hockey pants. If you go with the girdle, you can find lightweight pants that can be pulled up over it so that you don't rip the pads in the case of a fall.
  8. Legal Hockey Stick (may have wooden or plastic blade) with butt end attached to prevent end of stick from penetrating the cage masks on the helmet.  To determine proper length of stick, click on this link: Proper Hockey Stick length for roller bladers.doc
  9. Athletic cup (for males)
  10. Inline Skates-note all wheels must be on each skate.  If any skate is missing a wheel, you will not be allowed to play.

Goalies require special equipment. The required stick, helmet and pads might already be owned by your coach. Please speak to the coach before buying anything.
